“Boris Godunov” is the opera by M. Musorgsky in 4 acts with the prologue. Its libretto's authorship belongs to A. Pushkin. The premires took place in the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre on January 27, 1874, conducted by E. Napravnik, and in Moscow Bolshoy Theatre on December 16, 1888, conducted by I. Altani.
Rimsky-Korsakov's edition was staged at the Grand Hall of the Petersburg Conservatoire on November 28, 1896, conducted by Rimsky-Korsakov himself. In 1898 this version was staged at the Moscow Private Opera Company with Shalyapin as Boris, whose brilliant interpretation made for the opera's future success and glory.
Later there appeared the third edition by D. Shostakovich, having proposed the new instrumentation of the opera, however, leaving Musorgsky's harmony unaffected.
The opera is used to be staged in the original version, so as revised by Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich in Russia and all over the world. This incomparable canvas was filmed not once.
