Opera "Betrothal in a Monastery" or "Duenna" was created by Sergei Prokofiev in 1940. The storyline of the opera is the classic comedy "Duenna" by Richard Sheridan (1751-1816), playwright, called "English Beaumarchais." Sheridan wrote a piece in the form of "ballad opera" with songs and arias (music by popular theater composer Thomas Linley, the father of the wife of the playwright). Prokofiev acquainted with the piece and set about trying to write a modern opera buffa.
