The first comic opera was created in 1919, during the Prokofiev's life abroad. But its plan is associated with theatrical experiences of pre-revolutionary Russia, where in search of new forms of bright play were made attempts to revive the art of ancient Italian commedia dell'arte. In the years 1914-1915 Vs. Meyerhold published the magazine "Love for Three Oranges." The name was taken from a well-known fairy tale by Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806), created in the tradition of folk theater masks. In the first issue of this magazine K. Vogak, Vs. Meyerhold and V. Solovyov published the freestyle theatrical treatment of this tale. Young Prokofiev was attracted by poetic fiction, witty mix of fairy tales, jokes and satire.
The composer himself created the libretto. The score was completed by October 1919. The premiere took place on December 30, 1921 in Chicago. February 18, 1926 staging of "Love for Three Oranges" realized Leningrad Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre; 1927 - Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
