Ballet "Romeo and Juliet" was created by Sergey Prokofiev in the 1935-1936, became the first ballet put on Shakespeare's plot. The idea of the ballet based on the tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" was inspired by literary, theater and film expert Adrian Piotrovsky in December 1934.
Prokofiev's music was new and unusual, so despite the agreement with the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, ballet was not staged immediately. The premiere took place only in 1938, Dec. 30, in the city of Brno (Czechoslovakia). A year later, on January 11, 1940, Lavrovsky staged it in Leningrad Opera and Ballet theater (now Mariinsky Theatre). This performance with participation of Galina Ulanova became one of the peaks of ballet of the XX century. Today's "Romeo Juliet" - among the most popular ballets in theaters around the world.
