The ballet Cinderella was written by S. S. Prokofiev in 1940–1944 to a libretto by N. D. Volkov. The idea of the ballet dates back to the moment of Prokofiev's meeting in 1940 with G. Ulanova and the director of the Leningrad Kirov (now the Mariinsky) Theater E. Radin.
The composer was fascinated not only by the theme of love between Cinderella and the prince, the characters of the heroes, but also by the abundance of fairy-tale characters and situations. The presence of plot reasons for dance numbers of different genres was also important.
The premiere of the ballet took place in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theater on November 21 and 24, 1945.
In subsequent years, it was repeatedly staged on many stages of the world. It became one of the most popular ballet performances created in the 20th century.
