The Covetous Knight is an opera by S. Rachmaninov based on the text of the tragedy of the same name by A. Pushkin. Premiere: Moscow, Bolshoi Theatre, January 11, 1906 (on the same evening with Francesca da Rimini by Rachmaninov), conducted by the author. Re-staged at the Bolshoi Theater on September 27, 1912 under the direction of E. Cooper.
Rachmaninov's "The Covetous Knight" adjoins the type of recitative-declamatory operas, which began with Dargomyzhsky's "The Stone Guest" and continued with the works of Rimsky-Korsakov and Cui based on the texts of Pushkin's dramatic works. The composer widely developed the symphonic, orchestral principle, which plays a leading role in the opera.
