The Knight of the Rose /The Knight with the Rose/ The Knight of the Roses (Der Rosenkavalier) is a comedy based on music by R. Strauss in three acts, libretto by H. von Hofmannsthal.
Premiere: Dresden, 26 January 1911, conducted by E. Schuch; on the Russian stage - Leningrad, Opera and Ballet Theatre, November 24, 1928, conducted by V. Dranishnikov, director S. Radlov, artist G. Yakunin.
Piano score in German (and English - in remarks) language.
The creation of the opera meant Strauss' turn to Mozart. The best side of the composer's talent was revealed in "Der Rosenkavalier", and above all the ability to convey the joy of life, youth, love.
The action takes place in the 18th century in Vienna. If the librettist strove for elegant stylization, then the composer managed to democratize the images. Strauss intentionally allowed anachronisms, combining the melody characteristic of the old times (the scene of offering a rose, the Italian singer's canzonetta), with waltzes representing not even the 19th, but the 20th century. This is an opera about the past, written by a composer of a new era.
