Opera in four acts (seven scenes). Libretto by J. Meri, C. du Locle and A. Ghislanzoni (piano score in Russian and Italian).
The premiere of the opera Don Carlos, which took place in March 1867 on the stage of the Grand Opera, was a success: bass Aubin, baritone Faure and soprano Sass received great praise; a bust of the maestro was installed in the foyer of the theater. It was not without critics, as well as without passionate defenders such as Ernest Reyet and Th?ophile Gauthier. In October of the same year, an Italian production in Bologna, conducted by Angelo Mariani, brought triumphant success. The four-act edition, created by the author in 1882-1883, did not have the same reception; as for the third, Modena production, it seemed to be a return to the first, five-act version, albeit with corrections made in 1884. But in the 80s the glory of Don Carlos, like that of Simon Boccanegra in the second edition, was already completely overshadowed by a new masterpiece, Othello. Only recently has the opera taken its rightful place in the appreciation of international critics and the public. Both editions, four-act and five-act, are still competing with each other, and it is still unclear which one to give preference to. Meanwhile, the five-act version seems more logical and complete, as it allows you to better describe the plot and characters, and the material in its stage development is better distributed in it.
Conceived for the pompous Parisian theater where great opera was born, Don Carlos naturally fits the requirements of this genre, in which significant stage situations have at the same time great historical persuasiveness. Actors cannot be below their tasks. Verdi chooses for his picture strong or depressing passions, almost on the verge of human capabilities, unfolding against a wide background, lit by a gloomy glow of political strife and religious fanaticism. In this huge fresco, the composer first turns to dramatic characters and musical solutions, which he then, in the process of refining, will bring as close as possible to his latest stylistic manner.
