Rigoletto is an opera in 3 acts (4 scenes), libretto by F. M. Piave based on Victor Hugo's drama Le roi s’amuse. Premiere: Venice, theater "La Fenice", March 11, 1851 (piano score in Russian and Italian).

The creation of this opera marked a new stage in the composer's work. It is based on the drama of V. Hugo, which was forbidden to be staged. To get the Austrian censorship resolved, the authors had to agree to changes: Francis I, King of France, became the Duke of Mantua and the rest of the characters were renamed accordingly. The power of social denunciation did not decrease because the king was "demoted" to duke. In the musical dramaturgy, the figures of a dissolute, frivolous, living only for the pleasure of the ruler of Mantua and a destitute jester are contrasted. Verdi draws his characters in motion, development. The jester Rigoletto, who mocked the grief of Count Monterone, whose daughter was dishonored by the duke, is experiencing the same despair as the old man ridiculed by him. Rigoletto the jester turns into a suffering father.
From the very first performance, the opera was a great success, growing from performance to performance, soon appeared on the stages of other Italian theaters (often under other names - Viscardello, Clara of Perth), and then crossed the borders of Italy. It was staged in 1852 in Vienna, then in Pest, Prague and London. Italian troupes spread her fame around the world. In Paris, "Rigoletto" saw the light of the stage only in 1857 because of the protest of Hugo, outraged by the distortion of the text of his drama. However, having heard the opera, the writer was delighted with the music, especially the quartet.
