Gavin Harrison "Protean" Signature Snare Drums.
At the end of 2011, Sonor and Gavin Harrison began working on the project "Protean" with the aim of creating a snare drum that is as musically versatile as Gavin himself. The word "Protean" goes back to ancient Greek myths and means "universal" and "diverse". Gavin wanted this drum to be a "workhorse", quickly changing to the musical situation.
"When I had the chance to participate in the development of the Sonor snare drum, I knew exactly what I wanted to get as a result, my desires were based on 30 years of professional playing experience. I chose the shell material, a hybrid edge, damping rings, S-Hoop rims and an 8-spring snare, because I know that they "work" in any situation. We named the drum "Protean" because it is versatile and you can quickly change it to get a musically correct sound. I wanted the appearance of the drum to fit any installation. It has an art deco design and a classic black matte finish.

Construction and Finish.
Signature snare drums are made by hand in Germany from six layers (thickness 6 mm.) of selected birch wood.
The classic finish of Silky Black is set off by white substrates of chrome fittings.

Hybrid Shell Edge.
The vintage round edge is again used on the upper edge of the shell. Drums with such an edge were last produced by Sonor in 1975. The lower edge has a modern edge of 45 degrees.

Vintage Lags.
Gavin chose the old Phonic lags, which allowed adding "mass" to the shell and, at the same time reducing the voltage.

Hybrid Rims.
The "Protean" snare drums are equipped with an S-Hoop rim on the top and a special, open, with a triple flange, steel rim on the bottom.

Dual Glide System Strainer.
Gavin likes the advantages of the Dual Glide system but he went even further. The open lower rim makes the spring lock even more versatile, allowing you to use several springs on the drum and quickly replace them. Tuning the resonant plastic has also become much easier.

Exclusive Snare.
Gavin has developed a special “Straight 8 " spring with 8 springs located in the center and made of stainless steel.

Unique Dampener Rings.
Another feature of the drum is a set of three dampener rings (thin, medium, thick), ideally suitable for the S-Hoop rim.
Any spectrum of overtones can be extinguished using rings one at a time or in combinations.

Plastics.
The drums are equipped with Remo plastics (USA). Remo CS shock plastic with a white coating and a black dot, resonant plastic-Sonor Medium Resonance.

New Tuning Keys.
As a touring professional, Gavin constantly has to change and adjust the plastics on his drums. Over the years, he developed his own technique, which led to the appearance of two special keys for tuning.
The "Protean" keys make the replacement and adjustment of plastics faster, easier and much more convenient.
