Andrei Pavlovich Petrov (1930–2006) was born in Leningrad. In 1954 he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in the composition class of Professor O. A. Evlakhov. Laureate of State Prizes of the USSR (1967, 1976), Russia (1996), Prize of the President of the Russian Federation, People's Artist of the USSR (1990). He was awarded the Nika (1992) and Golden Aries (1995) cinematic awards. From 1964 until the last days of his life, he headed the Leningrad-St. Petersburg composers' organization, and since 1992 he was president of the Philharmonic Society of St. Petersburg. In 1998, A.P. Petrov was awarded the title of honorary citizen of St. Petersburg. A minor planet discovered in 1994 is named after him.
The songs and romances written by Andrei Petrov in the last two decades of his life reflected both the age of the composer himself and the emotional background of the country’s passage through the most important milestone of perestroika, through the difficult period of gaining freedom.
