Helping an aspiring musician enter the world of 20th-century music is a task as important as it is difficult. One of the greatest composers of the last century, Bela Bartok (1881–1945), being a pianist, teacher, musical ethnographer, author of the now famous methodology for teaching music, undertook a great deal of work to create a special cycle for beginning pianists. He called it "Microcosmos" (literally translated "small world"): it is both a "world of small quantities", music for the little ones, and a "small musical universe", a miniature model of the modern musical language with its imaginative world. The work of the Hungarian genius on "Microcosmos" lasted more than ten years, from 1926 to 1937.
The composition consists of 6 notebooks, including 153 pieces, arranged in ascending order of difficulty. Mastering these pieces sequentially, the student gets acquainted with the fundamental features of the composing technique of the 20th century, as well as with many unique piano playing techniques common in modern music.
The pieces of "Microcosmos" by Bartok have long and firmly entered the educational and concert pianistic repertoire.
