The centenary of Russian jazz celebrated in 2022 has become an occasion to comprehend its history and evaluate its achievements. Jazz is first of all a person, its creator and performer. The book by the well-known jazz critic and theorist E. S. Barban contains essays on musicians who have left a significant mark on the history of Russian jazz. The author was familiar with most of them, interviewed almost all of them, many were characters in his previous critical works, reviews and radio programs. Personal impressions and fragments of the interview became an integral part of the content of "Russian Jazz", becoming its documentary basis.
The characters in the book are extraordinary musicians who have played and continue to play in a variety of jazz styles: from all varieties of the modern mainstream to the avant-garde. Among them are German Lukyanov, Gennady Golshtein, David Goloshchekin, Alexei Kozlov, Igor Butman, Vladimir Chekasin, Sergey Kuryokhin and many others.
The genre of intellectual biography is combined in this work with a critical analysis of music, features of the creative individuality, artistic convictions, mentality and character of the portrayed musicians. Revealing the psychological and aesthetic motivation of jazz musicians, the author recreates their integral image and not always unambiguous connection with social reality and the world jazz process.
The desire to clear the musical portrait of exaggerated reputations, mythical notions and advertising cliches of apologetic criticism is an important part of the author's intention.
