Peteris Vasks is a Latvian composer, one of the greatest contemporary European writers. A graduate of the Lithuanian Academy of Music in the contrabass class (1970) and the Latvian State J. Vitola Conservatory (1978). Vasks's works emotionally rich, full of "sense of nature" reverence for the world - and at the same time deeply humane.
Sonata for contrabass solo was created in 1986. Contrabass is a "native" instrument to the composer. Works for various instruments in the first decade and a half has been one of the most notable directions of work of Vasks (he is the author of "Musical Moments" for clarinet solo, "The Book" for cello solo, "View from the birds" for flute solo ...) Sonata is a full-bodied composer's statement and at the same time gives the performer the opportunity to express different aspects of his talent - and a wealth of the instrument.
Peteris Vasks's works are performed by many orchestras and musicians of our time. Among them - the violinist Gidon Kremer, cellist David Geringas, conductors Saulius Sondeckis, Juozas Domarkas, piano duet Nora Novik and Raffi Haradzanjans, drummer Mark Pekarskij...
The publication is recommended to a concert contrabass players, conservatory students, students of music schools, colleges - and all those interested in contemporary music.
